Speaking As A Side Hustle – Guest Contributor Robert B Foster

There is no hotter commodity than information and every one of us is blessed with information that other people need.  There are many ways to get this information out to the consumer with the internet exploding with many different platforms but there is none more powerful than public speaking.

Speaking is the number one way to explode any business as it gets you and your business exposure as well as gets you in the room with the right people that will pay for your services.  What are your services you might ask?  Let’s take myself, for example, as a fitness coach I help people get stronger, shed body fat, have more energy, build confidence, improve self esteem and self love, and there is an entire process to make that happen.  It’s in that process that is valuable to companies, focus groups, wellness directors, even television shows.  I’ve extracted the lessons in that process to apply to other industries and now I have a keynote presentation that can cater to any industry.  I started my podcast, Shut Up and Grind, around those principles.

The first step is to define what the superpower is within your experience that can be taught to someone else or used to inspire someone else.  Like in my example above, it’s valuable to a company that may save lots of money on insurance by having a speaker come in and inspire their employees to live healthier lives.  I didn’t have to learn anything new.  I take what I already know and share it with a global audience and you can too.

Once you know what to talk about the next step is to define your ideal audience that needs to hear your message and can afford to pay your fee.  If you can turn your talk into an online course then you can also speak at free events and sell your course from the stage (online or in person) and monetize it that way.  For example, I agree to speak for free for a domestic violence support group of 20 people.  At the end of my talk, I offer my program to help them heal through storytelling which I sell for $297.  If 6 people buy it, that free talk just turned into $1,782!  Not bad for a 1 hour talk!

As your confidence as a speaker grows, you will learn to tailor your talks to different groups which will make you more valuable and able to get on bigger stages if that’s what you want to do.  If you think you don’t have what it takes to be a speaker I challenge you to practice!  You are only good at what you practice.  That is the final step to capitalize on this side hustle.  You defined your talk, ironed out who needs to hear your message so now practice as often as you can so you can walk into any room and have people begging to do business with you.

If you are looking for a rewarding and lucrative side hustle, speaking checks all of the boxes if you can overcome your initial fear.  What you do on a regular basis may seem mundane to you but can be the extraordinary golden nugget that someone else needs to hear.  Believe in what you do and how the world can benefit from the information that you share.  Whether it’s a small group of 10 people, an event of 500 people, or an arena full of people you have the potential to have a major impact on your peers and explode your own income by sharing your knowledge and expertise.
